Join me on Instagram live tonight (Nov 19th) @8pm EST and hang out with the Bottlenose Dolphins and the scientists of the Cedar Key Dolphin Project. I'll be showing you the dolphins up close, and showing the work the scientists are working on and explaining how incredible this relationship between wild animals and a bowfisherman is. My IG is @wildfl_zak

When I lived in Hawaii for a few decades, anytime you went on a boat you would see spinner dolphins racing along side spinning and flipping in the mornings. But if you went in the afternoon or evening I was told they were less active because they sleep in the afternoon. Is this accurate for most species of dolphins?
The two in Daytona that swam by me seemed like they were just kinda zombie swimming at the surface in just a up, down, up, down in no particular direction. It was around 4pm and I’m sorry I wasn’t sure what type they were.
But I learned to surf in Cocoa Beach in 1990 and surfed there for almost a decade and I assure you there’s as much, if not way more sea life action happening in Florida. But because of the clarity and visibility issues daily (and I mean everyday) us surfers can mostly just see what’s happening on the surface. It’s really difficult to ID anything even with a camera underwater unless you’re well out of where the waves are breaking.
But I do remember one time in the early 90’s when I was sitting next to the north side of Cocoa Beach pier and I was legit startled when a small Right whale with barnacles all over its head decided to surface “right” next to me. After the mild heart attack we had a brief moment and I said hello and it went on its way. Another time in the same spot I was paddling out on a beautiful 4-6 glassy morning and hit a fin with my hand. It was a large fin and as I was thinking to myself, there’s absolutely no way I’m not scoring these waves…I really hope that wasn’t a super big shark, lol.
The next set coming in I see about a dozen bottle nose dolphins surfing the first wave of the set and I was like…phew…IT’S ON DOLPHIN BROS!!! lol
